Home › SMS Short Links
An SMS short link compresses a long URL into a short address you can put in a text, and records the clicks. It solves three things: SMS character cost, the filtering and distrust that long URLs attract, and the fact that a raw link tells you nothing about performance.
But for paid campaigns the fourth benefit is the one that matters most: the message is already sent, and you can still change where it goes.
Why do SMS campaigns need short links?
Three practical reasons: SMS is billed by character with hard length limits, and a parameterised URL can eat half your message; long messy URLs are more likely to be filtered and more likely to read as a scam to the recipient; and a raw URL cannot be measured — you are guessing at how many people opened it.
Character cost
SMS bills by length and splits into multiple messages when you exceed it. A URL with UTM parameters is easily 60–100 characters of pure budget.
Delivery & trust
Long parameter-laden URLs are more likely to be blocked by carrier rules, and more likely to be ignored by the person reading them.
Measurability
Without click data you cannot tell a copy problem from a list problem. Total clicks show scale; unique visitors show real reach.
★ Editable destination
You cannot recall an SMS — but you can change what the link points to. When the landing page breaks, this is your only recovery option.
Why does “editable after send” matter so much?
Because SMS is one-shot and irreversible. Once the list is sent, it is sent. If the landing page then breaks — domain blocked, promotion ended, page erroring — a raw URL means that entire batch of traffic is dead. With a short link you change the destination and every subsequent click goes to the new one.
In practice this is close to essential: rotating a promo page, switching from variant A to B, rotating domains, or simply taking one link offline. None of it requires resending the campaign.
What does the dashboard show?
For each link: short code, destination URL, custom title, total clicks, unique visitors, enabled status and creation time, plus a per-link stats view. Search by code, destination or title; disable or delete with one click.
| Field | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Short code | The address that actually goes into the SMS — shorter means cheaper |
| Destination | The real landing URL. Editable at any time, effective immediately for later clicks |
| Title | Your own label (e.g. “SMS first-deposit”, “VIP”) so batches stay distinguishable |
| Clicks / Unique | Total volume vs real reach. A wide gap means heavy repeat clicking |
| Status toggle | Disable without deleting — for ended promotions or temporary takedowns |
| Stats | Detailed view for an individual link |
What does the equivalent cost?
Mainstream free tiers are not workable for campaign volume: Bitly’s free plan allows only 5–10 short links per month and keeps click data for 30 days; Rebrandly free is around 25 links; Short.io free gives 50 links and 1,000 tracked clicks. To use them properly you subscribe — Bitly runs $8 to $249 per month.
| Service | Free tier | Paid |
|---|---|---|
| Bitly | 5–10 links / month, 30-day data retention | $8 / $35 / $249 per month (annual pricing; monthly adds 20–30%) |
| Rebrandly | ~25 links, shared domain | from $13 / mo (1,500 branded links) |
| Short.io | 50 links, 1,000 tracked clicks | roughly half of Bitly |
| HZWADS | Included in the platform, not billed separately | |

Straight talk: ours is built to be sufficient for campaigns, not to be a general-purpose link SaaS. Bitly and similar offer branded domain management, QR codes, team collaboration and deep reporting — that is what they charge for. If you need those, they fit better. If you need links that work in an SMS, report clicks, and can be repointed, ours costs nothing.
FAQ
Can I change the destination? Does it affect messages already sent?
Yes, and the change takes effect immediately for subsequent clicks — sent messages need no action, recipients simply land on the new destination when they open it. Note that visits which already completed cannot be retroactively changed.
What is the difference between clicks and unique?
Clicks is the raw count; unique is deduplicated visitors. A wide gap usually means the same people opening repeatedly — either genuine interest, or a page that loads badly and makes people retry. Worth a separate look.
Disable or delete — which should I use?
Use disable for ended promotions or temporary takedowns: the link and its data stay and can be re-enabled. Delete only when you are sure you want neither. Prefer disabling — the SMS is already out there and someone may open it days later.
Is the free tier capped?
Short links are included in the platform and not billed separately. Like our PWA and creative tools, they exist to complete the funnel rather than as a product sold on its own. Ask us about the limits that apply to your account.
Can you guarantee SMS delivery?
No — delivery depends on the route, carrier rules and number status. A short link only affects one part of that (whether the URL itself triggers filtering). Any guaranteed-delivery claim is not credible. What we can do is keep the link layer clean, trackable and adjustable.
